The Danelaw was a special part of England. It existed from the late ninth century until the Norman Conquest. In these areas, Danish laws were used instead of Anglo-Saxon laws. This happened because Danish Vikings had conquered much of northern and eastern England. The name comes from the word "Dene," which was an old word for Danes. Most of these people were from Denmark, but some were Norwegian too.

This period began with a large group called the Great Heathen Army. They arrived in 865 to conquer the four Anglo-Saxon kingdoms. Leaders like Ivar the Boneless and Halfdan Ragnarsson led this massive force. The army captured the city of York in 867. They also took control of East Anglia and Mercia. By 874, the Danes controlled almost everything except the kingdom of Wessex.

King Alfred the Great of Wessex fought to protect his land. He faced many hard battles against the Danish leaders. In 878, Alfred won a big victory at the Battle of Edington. After this, Alfred and the Danish leader Guthrum made a peace treaty. This treaty helped define the borders between their kingdoms. The Danes were allowed to govern themselves. In return, they had to show loyalty to the English crown.

The Danelaw covered areas like Yorkshire and the Midlands. It also included parts of the East of England. This mix of cultures changed how people lived. It even changed how they spoke by creating Anglo-Norse dialects. These laws stayed in written records for a long time. Even in the 12th century, people still recognized the Danelaw as a distinct legal area.

Later history saw more changes in English rule. A king named Cnut the Great ruled a huge empire. His empire included Denmark, Norway, and parts of Sweden. He ruled a unified English kingdom from 1016 to 1035. After Cnut, different kings like Harthacnut and Edward the Confessor took the throne. Finally, the Norman Conquest in 1066 changed England once again. This ended the long era of the Anglo-Saxon and Danish influence.
