During this era, Norsemen from Scandinavia traveled far. They went on raids and made new colonies. They also traded goods in many different lands. These people reached as far as North America.

Most people call them Vikings today. However, not all Norsemen were pirates or raiders. Many were simply explorers or traders. This period changed how many parts of Europe looked.

These travelers used the sea to move around. They built strong ships to sail long distances.

They left their homes in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. Some went to the British Isles and Ireland. Others settled in the Faroe Islands and Iceland. They even reached Greenland and parts of Canada.

They also moved along trade paths in eastern Europe. In those areas, they were called Varangians. Their travels helped connect many distant places.

Many things caused the Vikings to leave home. Some scholars think there was not enough farmland. Others believe the population grew too large for the land.

New ways to build ships made long trips possible. In Norway, new kings were taking control of lands. This forced some local leaders to find new homes. Some people were also drawn to wealthy towns. They saw monasteries and cities as places to find riches. This mix of reasons drove their big expansion.

History tells us about many specific places they reached. They founded kingdoms in places like York and Dublin.

They also created the Danelaw in England. In France, they settled in a place called Normandy. Some even built a group called the Kievan Rus'. In 1021, they reached North America. This was a very long time ago. We know this because of old stories and items found in the ground.

These facts help us see their huge reach.

We learn about the Vikings from different sources. Many stories come from the people they met.

We also use archaeology to study their tools and homes. The Icelandic Sagas are famous written stories about them. In the past, people thought Vikings were only violent. However, later scholars saw their great skills. They admired their art and how they sailed.
