Most people use this name for Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. These three countries share a long history and similar languages.

Sometimes, people also include Iceland and the Faroe Islands in this group. Some authors even include Finland because of how its economy and culture work. The name Scandinavia can also describe the large peninsula in the north. This peninsula includes parts of northern Finland but leaves out Denmark. It is a region where many different lands and peoples connect.

The land in this region looks very different depending on where you stand.

In the west, you can see deep Norwegian fjords. The Scandinavian Mountains cover much of Norway and parts of Sweden. Galdhøpiggen is the highest peak in the whole region.

In the south, Denmark is very flat and low. To the east, you will find many lakes and groups of small islands called archipelagos. These lakes and hills were left behind by the ice age. The ice age ended about ten thousand years ago.

The weather changes a lot from the north to the south. Most people live in the southern parts because the climate is more temperate. The north stays near the Arctic Circle and has very long, cold winters.

The mountains often have an alpine tundra climate, which is very cold. In the west, the weather is often wet and mild. The mountains can even block moist air from reaching the east. This makes places like northern Sweden much drier and colder. Even so, a warm ocean current called the Gulf Stream keeps the area relatively mild.

Scandinavia has a very long and busy history.

During the Viking Age, people used longships to explore and trade. They even became the first Europeans to reach North America. Later, many nations joined together in groups like the Kalmar Union. This union held Denmark, Norway, and Sweden together for over 100 years.

Eventually, kings led their countries out of these unions. Many wars followed, which helped create the modern borders we see today. The last major union between Sweden and Norway ended in 1905.

Today, the countries of Scandinavia are very successful. Their economies are among the strongest in all of Europe.

They use something called the "Nordic model" for their social policies. This means they have very generous welfare systems to help their people. This way of living helps the region prosper in modern times. You can see these connections through shared culture and strong trade. Even the name Scandinavia has deep roots in ancient history and old stories.
