Kalmar Union

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Kalmar Union was a special way for three kingdoms to join together. These kingdoms were Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. The union also included places like Finland, Iceland, and Greenland. It even included islands like the Faroe Islands and Orkney. Under this union, the three lands shared one single monarch. However, each country still had its own laws and leaders. This allowed them to act as one large group in many ways.

This union worked by having one ruler manage foreign and domestic policies. The goal was to make the Scandinavian lands much stronger. One big reason for this was to stop the Hanseatic League. This was a powerful group of German traders in the north. The Scandinavian leaders wanted to block German expansion into the Baltic region. By working together, the three kingdoms could protect their own interests. They hoped to keep control over their own trade and lands.

Queen Margaret I of Denmark was the person who made the union happen. She was a very important leader in Scandinavia. She had many connections to the royal families of Norway and Sweden. After she helped her heir, Eric of Pomerania, take power, he was elected king. His coronation took place in Kalmar on June 17, 1397. This event officially started the Kalmar Union.

Even though they were joined, the union faced many hard jobs and fights. The kings wanted a very strong and unified state. But the noble leaders in Sweden and Denmark often wanted more power for themselves. In the 1430s, many conflicts began to break the union apart. For example, the Engelbrekt rebellion started in 1434. Some people in Sweden also grew angry about high taxes. These taxes were needed for wars against the Hanseatic League.

The union finally came to an end because of a Swedish rebellion. After a violent event called the Stockholm Bloodbath, a man named Gustav Vasa took action. He organized a rebellion in a place called Dalarna. He made an alliance with Lübeck to help him fight. Gustav Vasa was elected King of Sweden on June 6, 1523. His victory marked the final end of the Kalmar Union.
