This agreement joined two lands into one single state. This new country was called the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. It became one of the largest countries in Europe at that time.

The union changed how the lands were ruled together. It moved them from a simple link to a real union. This helped create a huge and powerful place.

This new state worked as a federal state. This means the two parts stayed somewhat separate. They kept their own armies and their own treasuries. They also kept their own laws and their own ways of governing.

However, they shared one single ruler. This ruler was an elected monarch chosen by the nobility. The king held two titles at once. He was the King of Poland and the Grand Duke of Lithuania. They also shared a common parliament called the Sejm. They even used a single coin called the złoty.

Before the union, the two lands were already linked. They were joined by the marriage of Jadwiga and Jogaila long ago.

King Sigismund II Augustus was the last of the Jagiellon family. He had no children or brothers to take his place. He wanted to make sure his family's work continued. Lithuania was also in a very dangerous spot. They were fighting wars with Russia and feared defeat.

Joining with Poland was a way to stay safe.

Getting the agreement signed was not easy. There were many long and difficult talks in Lublin.

Some Lithuanian leaders were afraid of losing their power. They did not want to be equal to the Polish nobility. Some Polish nobles did not want to help Lithuania without getting something back. In 1569, the king even took some lands from Lithuania. He gave lands like Podlachie and Kiev to the Polish Crown. This helped push the leaders to finally reach an agreement. They signed the final act on July 4, 1569.

The Commonwealth grew to be a very large place. At its peak, it had about 11 million people.

It was a place where many different kinds of people lived. Some people spoke different languages or followed different religions. Over time, many people began to follow Polish culture and language. This was called Polonization. Some historians say this union was like an early version of the European Union. It showed how different lands could work together as one.
