He was the last male ruler of the Jagiellonian family. This family had ruled for a long time. Sigismund was born on August 1, 1520, in Kraków. His parents were Sigismund the Old and Bona Sforza.

He was carefully taught by many smart scholars. His mother even wanted him to have a special name. She wanted to name him after a famous Roman leader.

Sigismund's rule was a very bright time for his people. Many people call it the Polish Golden Age.

Sigismund did many useful things for his lands. He started the first regular postal service in Poland. This is known today as Poczta Polska. He also created the first regular navy for the sea.

Life was not always easy for the young king. He married three different women during his life. His first wife was Elizabeth of Austria. They married in 1543 at the Wawel Cathedral.

Elizabeth was only 18 years old when she died in 1545. Sigismund then fell in love with Barbara Radziwiłł.

Many leaders in his court did not like her. They even argued with the king about their marriage. This was a very difficult time for the royal court.

Barbara became the Queen of Poland in 1550.

However, she became very sick shortly after her coronation. She died in Kraków on May 8, 1551. The king was very sad after her death. He often wore black clothes to show his grief. He even dressed in black until his own death. He finally married Catherine of Austria later on. Neither of his marriages resulted in living children.

Sigismund made big changes to how his lands worked. In 1569, he oversaw the Union of Lublin.

This union helped the two lands stay together. Sigismund died on July 7, 1572, in Knyszyn. His death marked the end of his great family line.
