The Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth was a huge and unique country in Europe.

It existed from 1569 until 1795. This state was a union between two lands. One was the Kingdom of Poland. The other was the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

It was one of the largest countries in Europe during its time. At its peak in the early 1600s, it covered about 990,000 square kilometers.

About 12 million people lived within its borders. This made it a very crowded and busy place. Many different groups of people lived there together.

The country worked as a federation of two nations. This means the two parts stayed somewhat separate. They kept their own names, laws, and territories.

However, they shared many important things. They used a single currency for money. They also worked together on foreign policy. This helped them deal with other countries.

The official languages were Polish and Latin. Catholicism was the main state religion. Even so, the land was known for being very tolerant. The Warsaw Confederation Act of 1573 helped protect religious freedom. This was very unusual for Europe at that time.

The history of this union began long before 1569. In 1385, a deal called the Union of Krewo was signed.

This happened when Queen Jadwiga of Poland married Jogaila of Lithuania. Jogaila became King Władysław II Jagiełło. Their descendants ruled for a long time. Eventually, Sigismund II Augustus wanted a stronger bond. He wanted to protect the borders of his land. He helped lead the merger in the city of Lublin.

On 1 July 1569, the Union of Lublin was officially signed. This created the Commonwealth as one single entity.

Governance in the Commonwealth was very different from other kingdoms. They used a system called Golden Liberty.

Instead of a king always being born into a family, they had an elective monarchy. This meant noble families elected a king for life. The nobles made up about 10% of the people. They were called the szlachta. These nobles met in a parliament called the General Sejm.

They held the power to make laws. A set of rules called the Henrician Articles limited the king's power. This helped keep the government in check.

After a long time of peace and wealth, things changed. The Commonwealth faced many attacks from its neighbors.

This led to a period of decline. The country became weaker over many years. In 1791, the people tried to fix things with a big reform. They wrote the 3 May Constitution.

This was the first modern constitution in European history. It was the second one ever written in the world. Sadly, the country could not be saved. Neighbors like Austria, Prussia, and Russia split the land. By 1795, the Commonwealth was gone.
