history Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Livonian Order was a special group of knights. They were a branch of the larger Teutonic Order. This group lived in a place called Livonia. They had their own leaders to make decisions. These leaders were called Masters. Each Master was elected by the other knights. They served as leaders for their whole lives.

\n\nThis group began in the year 1237. Before this, there was a group called the Swordbrothers. The Swordbrothers lost a battle in 1236. After that defeat, most of them joined the Teutonic Order. This created the new Livonian branch. In 1237, a man named Hermann Balk arrived in Riga. He was the Master of Prussia. He went to Riga to set up new leaders for the castles.

\n\nLife in Livonia involved many big changes. The knights worked hard to grow their lands. In 1238, they signed the Treaty of Stensby with Denmark. Denmark helped the knights expand their territory. In return, the knights gave land in northern Estonia to Denmark. The knights also fought many battles to keep their borders safe. They fought against Alexander Nevsky in 1242. They also fought against the Lithuanians near the city of Riga.

\n\nSometimes the knights had to work with others. In 1435, the order lost a battle called the Battle of Święta. This was a very hard day for the knights. Many high-ranking leaders died in this fight. Because of this, the knights signed a friendly agreement in Walk. They joined with bishops and city leaders. This new group was called the Livonian Confederation. It lasted from 1435 until 1561.

He decided to make many big changes to the land. He turned the lands into the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia. Most of the other lands were taken by the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Denmark and Sweden also took some of the land. This was the end of the Livonian Order.
