They formed in 1237. They were a branch of the Teutonic Order. This group lived in a place called Livonia.

In the early years, the knights grew their land. They signed a treaty with Denmark in 1238. Denmark helped them grow. In return, the knights gave land to Denmark. The knights also fought many battles. They fought Alexander Nevsky in 1242. They also fought the Lithuanians.

In 1435, the knights signed a new deal. They joined with bishops and cities. This was a friendly agreement. They worked together in the Livonian Confederation.

Things changed in the 1500s. The knights lost a big battle in 1560. The last master was named Gotthard Kettler. He made many big changes. He turned the lands into a new duchy. Most of the land was taken by others. Denmark and Sweden also took some land. This was the end of the order.
