They lived a long time ago. Some lived 62.5 million years ago. Others lived as recently as 12,000 years ago. They are now extinct, which means they are gone.

These animals looked like many animals we see today. They were ungulates, or hoofed animals. Some had long necks and long legs. A group called Macraucheniidae had very long necks. Their nose holes were high on their heads. Some think they had trunks like elephants. Others think they had thick lips.

Litopterns came in many sizes. Most were small. But some were very large. One kind, Macrauchenia, weighed about a ton. They ate many things. Some ate grass. Others ate leaves or hard fruit.

They began to disappear as the world changed. New animals arrived from North America. This happened when land connected the two continents. Humans also arrived in the Americas. This may have helped the litopterns go extinct.
