Notoungulates were a large group of animals in South America.

They lived from 61 million to 11,000 years ago. These animals came in many shapes and sizes. Some were small like rabbits. Others were big like rhinoceroses.

Scientists divide them into two main groups. These are called Typotheria and Toxodontia. Typotheres were usually small or medium. Toxodontians were often medium or large. Some toxodontians looked like hippopotamuses. One type called Homalodotherium even had claws on its arms. It could stand on its back legs to eat.

Many of these animals had special teeth. Their teeth grew all the time. This helped them eat tough plants. This might have happened because of grass or volcanic dust.

Notoungulates are related to perissodactyls. These are odd-toed animals like rhinos and horses. Eventually, the group began to fade. New animals arrived from North America. The climate also changed. The last ones died out about 12,000 years ago. This happened during a time when many large mammals vanished. Some think the arrival of humans played a part in this.
