They first appeared in Africa a long time ago. Over many years, they moved to Eurasia and North America. Later, they reached South America.

These animals had many different shapes. Some had very long lower jaws with tusks. Other types had short jaws. These shorter-jawed ones looked much like today's elephants. This is called parallel evolution. This happens when different animals develop similar traits.

Gomphotheres ate many kinds of plants. They had special teeth called bunodont teeth. These teeth had rounded tops instead of sharp ones. They chewed food by moving their jaws in a side-to-side way. They also moved their jaws up and down to crush food.

Most gomphotheres were as big as Asian elephants. Some were even larger. Their legs were shorter than elephant legs. This made their bodies look longer. Most gomphotheres died out long ago. The last ones lived in the Americas. They became extinct about 12,000 years ago after humans arrived.
