These animals came in many sizes. Some were tiny, like a large cat. Others were huge. The largest ones were as big as elephants. One group was called Megatheriidae. These animals were very heavy. They had thick bones and strong joints. This gave them great power. They also had long, scary claws to stay safe.

Ground sloths ate plants. Some used long noses to smell for food. Others had special lips to grab leaves. Their teeth were unique, too. They had very few teeth, and those teeth never stopped growing.

These sloths lived in many places. They lived from the far south of South America all the way to Alaska. Some even lived near the ocean.

Most ground sloths died out about 12,000 years ago. This happened on the main land. Some lived on islands for much longer. People think they died because of climate change or hunting. It is amazing to study these big animals.
