These bears are called Arctodus. Their name means "bear tooth." There were two main kinds of these bears. One was the lesser short-faced bear. The other was the giant short-faced bear.

The giant kind was very big. It was one of the largest land carnivores ever. A male could weigh up to 1,000 kg.

These bears were very different from each other. Males were often much larger than females. This is called sexual dimorphism.

They had short snouts. This gave them a unique look. They ate many things. They ate plants and animals like deer. They liked to live in open woods. These bears went extinct a long time ago. The lesser kind died out about 300,000 years ago. The giant kind died out about 12,800 years ago. We do not know exactly why. It may have been because their food disappeared.
