It lived in North and South America a long time ago. These wolves lived in many places. They lived on plains and in grassy lands. They even lived in some mountain forests.

Most of their bones were found in Los Angeles. These bones came from the La Brea Tar Pits.

A dire wolf was about the same size as a gray wolf.

But they had some special parts. Their teeth were larger and better at cutting meat. Their bite was also very strong. This helped them hunt big animals. They ate ancient horses, camels, and ground sloths.

Scientists study their bones to learn how they lived. They use DNA, which is the code inside living things. This code shows the dire wolf was a unique group.

The wolves went extinct about 10,000 years ago. This happened when the climate changed. It also happened when their food went away. They had to live with other species too.
