Scientists found its fossils from Canada to Mexico. Many bones were found in the La Brea Tar Pits.

Studies show this cat was related to the modern lion. It likely split from the Eurasian cave lion. This happened about 165,000 years ago. The American lion eventually died out. This happened during a time when many large animals disappeared. Humans had arrived in the Americas by then. Changes in the weather may have also caused it. These changes made it hard for the cats to find homes. Some people think hunting made it harder to find food. This is a way that losing prey can hurt a whole group of animals.
