In fact, their bone thickness was comparable to that of a brown bear. These limbs were also about 10% longer in relation to their skull length than modern lions. This robust anatomy helped them function as dominant hunters. Such strength was necessary to tackle large prey in the Pleistocene landscape.

Our knowledge of this cat comes from many important fossil discoveries. The first specimen was found in the 1830s by William Henry Huntington. He discovered a partial jaw in a Mississippi ravine.

In 1853, Joseph Leidy gave this specimen its first scientific name, Felis atrox. Later, researchers found many more fossils at the La Brea Tar Pits in California. Other sites have also provided vital clues about the species. In 1907, skulls were found by gold miners in Kotzebue, Alaska. This helped show how far north the lions lived. Another major site is Natural Trap Cave in Wyoming. This site is the second most productive for American lion fossils. It is especially important because it contains well-preserved mitochondrial DNA. This DNA allows scientists to study the genetics of the species more deeply.

The American lion eventually went extinct during the end-Pleistocene extinction event. This event saw the disappearance of many large animals across the Americas. Scientists propose several reasons for this loss. One factor was climatic change, which likely reduced the available habitat. Another theory involves the arrival of humans in the Americas. Human hunting of herbivore prey may have caused a trophic cascade. A trophic cascade occurs when the loss of one group of animals affects the entire food web.
