As an apex predator, it sat at the top of the food chain. It shared its environment with other large carnivores, such as cave hyenas. These animals often came into conflict with one another. Understanding the cave lion helps scientists reconstruct the complex ecosystems of the Ice Age.

The lineage of the cave lion underwent significant physical changes over time. It began with ancestors like Panthera fossilis, which appeared in Eurasia around 700,000 to 600,000 years ago. Some studies suggest these early forms may have been in Spain as far back as 1 million years ago. These early members were much larger than later cave lions. Some individuals had a body mass of 450 kg and a shoulder height of 1.5 meters. As the lineage progressed toward the Late Pleistocene Panthera spelaea, the animals showed a progressive reduction in body size. By the end of their existence, they were comparable in size to small modern lions. This included a body mass of only 150 kg and a shoulder height of 1.1 meters.

Anatomically, the cave lion possessed several distinct features that separated it from modern lions. It had a relatively longer and narrower muzzle. Its eye sockets, or orbits, were larger than those of its ancestors. The skull also featured a strongly arched zygomatic region. Their teeth showed specific differences, such as different cusp morphology on the carnassial teeth. To survive the cold Ice Age climate, they likely had a thick, dense undercoat. This coat probably consisted of yellowish-to-white wavy downy hair. This was covered by a smaller mass of darker guard hairs. While juveniles had yellowish fur, adults likely had grey fur.

The evolutionary history of these cats is complex and involves many branching paths. The American lion, Panthera atrox, is considered a sister group to the Late Pleistocene cave lion. This split likely occurred when a population became isolated south of the Cordilleran Ice Sheet. Scientists estimate this separation happened around 165,000 years ago. Genetic analysis of mitochondrial DNA shows that cave lions and modern lions split about 500,000 years ago. However, nuclear genome evidence suggests interbreeding between modern lions and Eurasian fossil lions occurred until 500,000 years ago. By 470,000 years ago, no further interbreeding between these two lineages took place.

The scientific discovery of the cave lion has evolved through centuries of research. In 1774, Johan Friedrich Esper identified extinct animal bones in the Zoolithenhöhle cave in Germany. In 1810, Georg August Goldfuss named a fossil skull Felis spelaea. Throughout the 19th century, researchers like W. Dawkins and W. Sandford worked to classify the species. For much of the 20th century, many scientists believed the cave lion was simply a subspecies of the modern lion. Some even proposed it was a subspecies of the tiger. Modern genetic studies, including analysis of mitochondrial genomes in 2004, have since confirmed that Panthera spelaea is a distinct species.
