They were also called the Atlas lion or the Egyptian lion. These lions lived in many places like deserts and mountains. Their home stretched from Morocco all the way to Egypt. They liked living in forests and wooded hills too. Scientists once thought they were a completely different type of lion. Now, they are part of a larger group called Panthera leo leo. This group includes lions from West and Central Africa and Asia.

These lions were famous for their very long hair. This hair is called a mane. The manes could be many colors from light to dark. Some manes were so long they went under the belly. This long hair might have helped them stay warm. The Atlas Mountains can be very cold in the winter. Other things like food and hormones also change how manes grow.

People have studied these lions for a very long time. In 1758, a scientist named Carl Linnaeus gave them a name. Later, in 1826, Johann Nepomuk Meyer described a lion skin from the Barbary Coast. In 1930, Reginald Innes Pocock changed how we name them. He put lions into a group called the genus Panthera. Scientists still debate how to group different lions today. They use DNA to find the true family tree.

Many facts tell us about how these lions lived. Some hunters said wild males weighed between 160 and 550 pounds.

However, scientists are not sure if those numbers are correct. Fossils from the Bizmoune cave are 100,000 to 110,000 years old. These lions lived in small family groups called prides. They ate animals like wild boar and gazelles. When those were gone, they sometimes ate livestock from farmers.

Sadly, these lions are now extinct in their original home. This happened because people used firearms to hunt them. People were even paid money to shoot lions. The last wild lion was shot in Morocco in 1942. Some small groups might have lived in Algeria until the 1960s. Even though they are gone from the wild, they are not entirely gone. Many lions in zoos today still carry Barbary lion genes.

Their range stretched from the mountains and deserts of Morocco all the way to Egypt. They preferred living in Mediterranean forests, woodlands, and scrub environments. Today, this specific population is considered locally extinct in its original North African home.

For many years, scientists believed the Barbary lion was a completely distinct subspecies. This idea was based on physical traits, especially their unique manes. Male Barbary lions were known for having very long hair. Some manes even extended over the shoulder and under the belly toward the elbows. The color of these manes varied from light to dark tawny. Researchers believe these long manes may have helped the lions stay warm. The Atlas Mountains experience much lower temperatures in the winter than other African regions. However, modern science has changed our understanding of these physical differences.

Recent genetic research has reshaped how we classify these animals. Morphological and genetic analyses show that Barbary lions do not differ significantly from Asiatic lions. They belong to the same subclade, which is a group within a larger family tree. This North African and Asian group is closely related to lions from West and Central Africa. Because of this, scientists now group them under the single subspecies Panthera leo leo. While they looked different, their DNA shows they are part of a larger, connected population. A specific mitochondrial DNA marker, or haplotype, can still help identify lions that may be descended from them.

History shows a long timeline of human interaction with these lions. In 1758, Carl Linnaeus proposed the scientific name Felis leo for a specimen from Algeria. In 1826, Johann Nepomuk Meyer described a lion skin from the Barbary Coast as Felis leo barbaricus. Later, in 1930, Reginald Innes Pocock moved lions into the genus Panthera. Throughout the 20th century, zoologists debated whether different North African lions were separate subspecies or the same animal. By 2017, the Cat Classification Task Force officially grouped these populations into the single subspecies Panthera leo leo.

The disappearance of the Barbary lion was driven by human activity. The spread of firearms and the use of bounties for shooting lions caused a massive decline. By the mid-19th century, the population had dropped significantly. In Libya, they disappeared from the coast by the start of the 18th century. In Tunisia, they were gone by 1890. In Algeria, lions vanished from several regions between 1890 and 1893. The last recorded shooting of a wild Barbary lion occurred in 1942 near Tizi n'Tichka in Morocco.

Small groups may have survived in remote areas of Algeria and Morocco until the early 1960s.

Despite their disappearance from the wild, these lions left a significant mark on history and science. Fossils found in the Bizmoune cave near Essaouira date back 100,000 to 110,000 years. In the Middle Ages, Barbary lions were even kept in the menagerie at the Tower of London. DNA testing on skulls from that era confirmed they lived there between 1280 and 1480.

In the wild, they lived in prides, which are social family groups. They preyed on animals like wild boar and gazelles. When those animals became scarce, they sometimes hunted livestock. Their ecosystem also included other predators like the African leopard and the Atlas bear.

Understanding the Barbary lion helps scientists study how animals move and change over time. A 2008 study of 357 lion samples suggested that a major group of lions developed in East Africa. This group likely traveled north and west about 118,000 years ago. This movement helped explain how lions became spread across Africa and West Asia. Even though the wild Barbary lion is gone, their genetic legacy remains. Many lions currently living in zoos around the world likely carry Barbary lion genes from their ancestors.
