Most Panthera cats can roar. This happens because of their larynx. The larynx is a part of the throat. It has large vocal folds that let them make loud sounds. The snow leopard is different. Most cats in this group have a special way of making noise. They have a larynx, which is a part of the throat. This larynx has large vocal folds covered in a soft pad. These parts allow the cats to roar loudly.

Today, we use DNA to learn even more about them.

The American lion was one of the largest species. It lived in North America and became extinct about 13,000 years ago. There was also a cave lion in Eurasia. Some fossils from South Africa date back to about 3 million years ago. In Tanzania, scientists found remains of a species called Panthera principialis. This cat lived about 3.7 million years ago.

Beyond these living species, many extinct species once belonged to this group. Studying *Panthera* helps scientists understand the evolution and diversity of large predators.

Members of the *Panthera* genus possess unique physical traits, particularly in their skulls and throats. Their skull profiles are generally flat or evenly convex. The area between the eyes, called the frontal interorbital area, is not noticeably raised. Most importantly, these cats have a specialized larynx, or voice box. This larynx contains large vocal folds covered in a fibro-elastic pad. This specific anatomy allows them to produce a loud roar.

However, the snow leopard is an exception. It has shorter vocal folds that offer less resistance to airflow, so it cannot roar. Instead, they can prusten, which is a soft, snorting sound used during friendly contact.

Scientists categorize these cats into distinct species and subspecies based on genetics and physical features. The tiger (*P. tigris*) and lion (*P. leo*) are well-known examples. The jaguar (*P. onca*) is a monotypic species, meaning it has no subspecies.

The leopard (*P. pardus*) has many subspecies, such as the African leopard and the Amur leopard. The snow leopard (*P. uncia*) was once placed in its own genus, *Uncia*. However, genetic research led to its inclusion in *Panthera* in 2008. It is considered the sister species to the tiger.

The history of classifying *Panthera* has changed many times. Lorenz Oken named the genus in 1816, initially grouping all spotted cats together. In 1916, the taxonomist Reginald Innes Pocock revised this classification. He used skull features to group the tiger, lion, jaguar, and leopard. Since the mid-1980s, researchers have used genetic studies of blood samples to refine these groups. This technology has shown that some previously named subspecies do not have enough genetic distinction to remain separate.

Fossil evidence provides a deep timeline for the evolution of these cats. Genetic studies suggest that pantherine cats diverged from the subfamily Felinae between six and ten million years ago. The earliest known definitive species, *Panthera principialis*, was found in Tanzania and lived about 3.7 million years ago.

In South Africa, fossil remains of the *Panthera* lineage date back to approximately 3 million years ago. Other ancient species, like the American lion (*P. atrox*), were massive. The American lion lived in North America and became extinct roughly 13,000 to 12,000 years ago.

There are many surprising facts regarding the diversity of this genus. For example, "black panthers" are not a unique species. They are simply melanistic specimens of leopards or jaguars.

This means they have a higher concentration of dark pigment in their fur. Additionally, the extinct *Panthera gombaszogensis* is often suggested to be the ancestor of the modern jaguar. It lived in Europe and possibly parts of Asia and Africa between 2 million and 350,000 years ago.

Understanding *Panthera* connects us to broader biological systems and evolutionary history. The way these cats dispersed across the globe tells a story of changing environments. For instance, the lineages of tigers and snow leopards likely spread through Southeast Asia during the Late Miocene.
