Panthera is a special group of big cats.

This group includes the largest living cats on Earth. There are five main species alive today. You can find the lion, tiger, leopard, and jaguar. The snow leopard is the fifth member.

These animals are very important to study. They help us understand how big cats live and change.

Most cats in this group have a special way of making noise. They have a larynx, which is a part of the throat. This larynx has large vocal folds covered in a soft pad. These parts allow the cats to roar loudly.

The snow leopard is the only one that cannot roar. It has shorter vocal folds that let air pass through easily. Instead, these cats can prusten. Prusten is a soft, snorting sound used to greet friends.

Scientists have studied these cats for a long time. A man named Lorenz Oken named this group in 1816. He originally put all the spotted cats together. Later, a researcher named Reginald Innes Pocock changed how we group them. In 1916, he used skull shapes to group the tiger, lion, jaguar, and leopard.

Today, we use DNA to learn even more about them.

History shows us that many other cats lived long ago.

The American lion was one of the largest species. It lived in North America and became extinct about 13,000 years ago. There was also a cave lion in Eurasia. Some fossils from South Africa date back to about 3 million years ago. In Tanzania, scientists found remains of a species called Panthera principialis. This cat lived about 3.7 million years ago.

Learning about Panthera helps us see how animals are related.

For example, genetic studies show the snow leopard is a close relative of the tiger. Even though they look different, they share a history. We also know that black panthers are not a separate species. They are just leopards or jaguars with dark fur. Studying these cats connects the animals we see today to the ones from the past.
