The clouded leopard can even climb down vertical tree trunks head first. It uses its hind paws to hang from branches. During the day, it likes to rest high up in the trees. At night, it hunts for food on the forest floor.

People have been studying these cats for a long time. Edward Griffith first described a clouded leopard in 1821. He studied a skin from China. Other scientists like Brian Houghton Hodgson and Robert Swinhoe also found specimens. They found cats in Nepal and Taiwan. In 1867, John Edward Gray gave them the name Neofelis. This name belongs to the group they are in.

Clouded leopards live in many different places in Asia. They live in dense forests from the Himalayas to Southeast Asia. They are found in countries like India, Bhutan, and Thailand.

Some places, like Singapore and Taiwan, no longer have them. Scientists worry about the cats because there are fewer than 10,000 adults left. They are listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. This is because forests are being cut down. People also hunt them for their skins.
