The siamang is a very special kind of ape.

It is the largest of all the gibbon species. These apes live in the forests of Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. They have dark, shaggy hair that is very thick.

Their arms are very long and gangling. In fact, their arms are even longer than their legs. They spend most of their lives high up in the trees. This way of living is called being arboreal.

Siamangs have two very interesting physical traits. First, the second and third toes on each foot are joined by a thin skin. This is called syndactyly, which comes from Greek words meaning "with fingers."

Second, they have a large gular sac, which is a throat pouch. Both males and females have this pouch. They can inflate it until it is as big as their head. This helps them make loud, resonating calls that carry through the forest. They use these sounds to talk to neighbors or defend their territory.

Scientists have studied these apes for a long time. Fossil records show that siamangs have existed since the Middle Pleistocene.

Researchers like David Chivers have studied them in Malaysian rainforests. He looked at how they choose which fruits to eat. Other experts like Noel Rowe have made guides to help us identify them. We also know about their family lives from many different field studies. These studies help us understand how they live in the wild.

There are many specific facts about the siamang.

An average siamang is 90 cm long, but some reach 150 cm. They can live for about 40 years in captivity. In Sumatra, they can live in forests up to 3800 m high. They eat at least 160 different kinds of plants. Their favorite food is the fig fruit. They live in groups of about four to six individuals. A single group might have a home range of 23 hectares.

Siamangs are very important for the health of the forest.

When they eat fruit, they help spread seeds through their waste. This helps new plants grow in different places. They are also very social with their families. They use grooming, which is cleaning each other, to stay close. They even use sign language and pointing to communicate. Sadly, losing their forest home to palm oil production is a big problem for them.
