This cat is special because it has a unique look. Its fur is a grayish yellow or gray color. It has small, irregular patterns that look like clouds on its shoulders. These cloud markings often have spots inside them. The cat also has a very long tail. This tail can grow as long as its body to help it balance.

This cat has some very interesting ways of working. Its pupils can contract into thin vertical slits. It can also purr because of a special bone in its throat. Its canine teeth are very long. These teeth are long compared to the size of its skull. This is true for any living cat. The cat usually hunts on the ground. However, it uses its climbing skills to hide from danger. It is a secretive animal, so we do not know much about its daily habits.

Scientists have studied this cat for a long time. Georges Cuvier gave it a scientific name in 1823. He named it to honor Pierre-Médard Diard. Diard sent a skin and a drawing to a museum in France. Later, in 2006, a study showed this cat is a separate species. It is different from the clouded leopard in mainland Southeast Asia. The Sunda version has darker fur and smaller cloud patterns. This helped scientists group them differently.

There are many important facts about where these cats live. In Borneo, they live in lowland rainforests. In Sumatra, they are often in hilly areas. Researchers found five cats in the Tabin Wildlife Reserve in 2005. In Sabah, there are about 1,500 to 3,200 cats. But only a small number live in protected reserves. The total population is likely fewer than 10,000 mature cats. Because of this, the cat is listed as Vulnerable.

We can think of the forest as the cat's home. When trees are cut down, the cat loses its home. This is called deforestation. In Borneo, forest cover dropped from 75% in the 1980s to 52% by 2005. This makes it hard for the cats to find food or safety. They also face threats from illegal hunting. Many groups now work to study and protect them. They want to make sure these beautiful cats stay safe in the wild.
