It is the only species of tapir that lives outside of the Americas. These large animals live in tropical forests in places like Sumatra and Malaysia. They are very important to their homes, but they face many hard jobs today. Because there are fewer than 2,500 mature individuals left, they are listed as Endangered.

This means we must learn how to protect them.

A tapir has a very unique way of looking and moving. They have a long, flexible nose called a proboscis. This nose helps them find and grab food.

Their bodies have a striking black and white pattern. A large white patch covers their middle, from shoulders to rear. This pattern acts like camouflage. It breaks up their shape in the thick forest plants. When they sleep, they might even look like a large rock.

This helps them stay hidden from predators.

Scientists have studied these animals for a long time. A man named Anselme Gaëtan Desmarest named the species in 1819. He used a description from another scientist named Pierre-Médard Diard. Later, in 1926, a Dutch zoologist found a special black version in Sumatra. This black tapir was sent to the Rotterdam Zoo in the early 1920s.

Modern science now uses DNA to see how they are related to other animals. We know they are a very old group of animals.

There are many interesting facts about how they live. A Malayan tapir can weigh up to 350 kilograms.

They have four toes on their front feet and three on the back. These animals are herbivores, which means they only eat plants. They eat the leaves and shoots of over 115 different plant types. They are mostly active at night or during dawn and dusk. This way of life is called being crepuscular. They also love to swim and can climb steep hills.

You can think of a tapir as a forest gardener. By moving through the trees, they help the forest stay healthy.

Even though they are big, they can be very quiet. They use high-pitched squeaks and whistles to talk to each other. They often live alone and mark their own paths through the bushes. Some people even want to bring them back to islands like Borneo. This would help make their forest homes even stronger.
