It is likely the ancestor of the water buffaloes we see on farms today. These animals are very large and heavy. They can weigh much more than the domestic kind. They are among the heaviest wild bovids in the world. They are only a little bit smaller than the gaur. This animal is very important to study to understand its farm cousins.

These buffaloes have a very distinct look. Their skin is ash-gray or black. They have coarse, sparse hair that grows forward from their hips. Their heads are long and narrow with a small tuft of hair on the forehead. Both males and females have very large horns. These horns are heavy at the base and spread out wide. In fact, their horns are larger than any other living bovid.

People first described this animal in 1792. A man named Robert Kerr described a buffalo skull from Bengal in northern India. Later, Charles Hamilton Smith gave them the name Bubalus in 1827. He noticed they had large heads and special shapes for their horns and ears. Scientists have worked hard to name them correctly over many years. In 2003, a group of experts officially recognized their scientific name, Bubalus arnee.

In India, many live in Kaziranga National Park. In Nepal, they live in the Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve. Their numbers have changed a lot over time. In 1997, there were fewer than 1,500 mature individuals left. Today, there are less than 4,000 mature individuals in the whole world.

These animals live in interesting social groups. Female buffaloes and their young live in clans. These clans can have up to 30 members. Old females usually lead these groups.
