African buffalo

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The African buffalo is a very strong animal found in many parts of Africa.

They live in places like grasslands, swamps, and thick forests. These animals are very important to the land because they are great grazers. They eat tall, coarse grasses that other animals might not like. As they eat, they mow down the grass for other animals to use.

Because they need to drink every day, they stay near water. They are much more closely related to Asian buffalo than to cows. They are also known for having an unpredictable temperament. This makes them very hard to tame or keep as pets.

An African buffalo has a very sturdy body.

Their front legs are short and thick to support their heavy front. Their front hooves are wider than their back hooves for this reason. On many males, the horns have a special shape. The bases of the horns meet to form a bone shield. This shield is called a boss.

The boss does not become hard until the buffalo is 8 or 9 years old. The horns can grow to be more than one metre wide. In females, the horns are smaller and do not have a boss.

Scientists recognize five different subspecies of the African buffalo.

The largest is the Cape buffalo, found in Southern and East Africa. The smallest is the forest buffalo, which lives in Central and West Africa. The forest buffalo is about the size of a zebra. There is also the Sudan buffalo and the Nile buffalo. One more is the mountain buffalo from the Virunga Mountains. These different types live in different homes across the continent.

There are many interesting facts about how these animals live.

A large Cape buffalo male can weigh up to 1,000 kilograms. In contrast, a forest buffalo might weigh only about 250 kilograms. African buffalo have 52 chromosomes in their cells. This is different from domestic cattle, which have 60. They also face many dangers from predators in the wild. Lions often hunt them, and sometimes a whole pride must work together. Nile crocodiles may attack calves or old animals near the water.

Living in a herd helps buffaloes stay safe.

Most herds are made of related females and their young offspring. They follow a social order where some members are more dominant. Even though they are strong, they must watch out for many things. They can get sick from diseases like foot-and-mouth disease. Some people even work to breed buffalo that are free from these sicknesses. These healthy buffaloes can be very valuable to breeders. They show how important it is to keep these animals healthy.
