It is a wild relative of the domestic yak. These animals are very strong and heavy. They live in high, treeless places called uplands. This habitat is mostly made of mountains and plateaus. The wild yak is one of the largest bovid species in the world.

To stay warm, the wild yak has a special way of staying cozy. They have long, shaggy hair on their bodies. Under that hair, they have a thick, woolly undercoat. This coat covers their chest, flanks, and thighs. In males, this undercoat can grow into a long skirt. This skirt can even reach the ground. The hair also covers parts of their bodies that might get cold. This helps them live in very chilly places.

Scientists have studied how these animals changed over time. The wild yak likely split from the aurochs millions of years ago. This happened between one and five million years ago. Some researchers think their closest relatives are bison.

The wild yak is a very important part of nature. It helps us understand how animals adapt to high mountains. It is a unique part of the history of life.

Wild yaks live in many different places today. They are mostly found in northern Tibet and western Qinghai. They also live in parts of Xinjiang and Ladakh in India.

In China, there are about 170 wild golden yaks left. These yaks have a golden-brown color instead of dark brown. An adult male can be very large and heavy. Females are much smaller than the males. They are about one-third the weight of a bull yak.

Most wild yaks live together in large herds. These herds can have several hundred animals in them. Most of the herd is made of females and young calves.

Adult males usually live alone or in tiny groups. These groups might only have six individuals. The yaks eat many things like grasses and sedges. They also eat small herbs and mosses. They move to lower areas when the winter comes. This helps them find food more easily.
