Tahr

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Tahrs are large animals with hooves. They are related to goats and sheep. These animals live in Asia.

Scientists once thought they were one group. They used the name Hemitragus for them. Now we know they are three separate groups. This is because of genetic studies. These studies look at the tiny building blocks of life. Each group now has its own special name. The Himalayan tahr is one kind. The Nilgiri tahr is another. The Arabian tahr is the third kind.

These animals follow a steady daily routine. They spend their mornings eating food. After they eat, they take a long rest. They do not stay active all day. They feed again when the evening comes. Tahrs are not usually active at night. You can often find them in the same spot during the morning and evening.

Learning about these animals has changed over time. Scientists used to group them all together. A study by Ropiquet and Hassanin in 2005 changed this. They used molecular evidence to look at their traits. This showed the animals were not so closely related. This discovery helped us name the three separate genera. These names are Hemitragus, Nilgiritragus, and Arabitragus.

Different tahrs live in different places. The Arabian tahr lives in Oman. The Nilgiri tahr lives in South India. There were about 1,400 Nilgiri tahrs in 1998. Most live between Tamil Nadu and Kerala. This animal is the state animal of Tamil Nadu. In 2023, the government named October 7 as Nilgiri Tahr Day. This day honors E. R. C. Davidar.

The Himalayan tahr lives in a large area. It stays in the high Himalayas. Some have been moved to New Zealand. In the Southern Alps, people hunt them for fun. Other tahrs live on Table Mountain in South Africa. These came from a pair that escaped a zoo in 1936. Most of those animals were later culled. This means many were removed.
