These animals are native to many parts of Europe and Western Asia. You can find them in the Alps, the Pyrenees, and the Caucasus mountains. They live in rocky places at high elevations. Some live as high as 3,000 meters. They also live on the South Island of New Zealand.

These animals have a special way of living through the seasons. In the summer, they stay in high meadows above the tree line. When winter comes, they move down to pine forests. They eat different things depending on the weather. In summer, they munch on highland grasses and herbs. In winter, they eat bark and needles from trees.

This helps them stay fed in the cold.

Chamois have interesting social lives and family groups. Females and their young live in herds of 15 to 30 animals. Adult males usually live alone for most of the year. During the rut, males fight for the attention of females.

A mother carries her baby for 170 days. She usually gives birth to one kid in May or June. These kids are fully grown by one year of age.

History shows how chamois moved to new lands. In 1907, chamois arrived in New Zealand as a gift. The Austrian Emperor, Franz Joseph I, sent them to the country. They were sent in exchange for rare birds and lizards. Two males and six females arrived on a ship called the SS Turakina.

They were moved by train and horse to Mount Cook.

Humans use many parts of the chamois in daily life. People have used chamois leather for a long time. This leather is very smooth and good for polishing things. Some people even wear a tuft of hair from the neck on hats. This is called a gamsbart.

You might see these decorations in alpine countries. Today, humans are the main predators of these mountain animals.
