The mountain goat is a special mammal that lives in high, rocky places.

These animals are found in the rugged mountains of western North America. They love to climb on steep cliffs and icy paths. Staying at high elevations is a smart way to stay safe. It keeps them away from predators like wolves, pumas, and bears. Most goats stay above the tree line where it is very cold. They only move to lower areas when food is hard to find.

Their feet have soft inner pads that help them grip the stone. They also have cloven hooves that can spread apart to stay steady. Sharp dewclaws on their feet act like extra points to stop slips. To move up a slope, they use powerful muscles in their necks and shoulders. When they climb, they tuck their front legs close to their chest. This helps them keep their balance while moving upward.

Even though they have "goat" in their name, they are not true goats.

They belong to a group called "goat-antelopes." This group includes animals like the chamois from Europe and the takin from the Himalayas. Scientists think their ancestors lived near Tibet or Mongolia long ago. These ancestors likely crossed the Bering Strait to reach North America. The living mountain goat is the only species left in its genus, Oreamnos. This name comes from Greek words meaning "mountain lamb."

Mountain goats have very thick coats to survive the freezing weather.

They have a double coat made of dense wool and long, hollow hairs. This keeps them warm even when winds are very strong. Both males and females have long black horns and beards. Males are usually much larger than females. A male can weigh about 30% more than a female. In the spring, they rub against rocks to shed their old wool.

Females, called nannies, give birth to kids in the late spring. A kid is born on a high ledge and can climb within hours. Nannies are very protective and will fight to keep kids safe. They might even stand below a kid on a slope to stop a fall. In the wild, these animals usually live for 12 to 15 years.
