The Antilocapridae are a special family of animals from North America.

Most members of this family are now extinct. Only one species lives in our world today. This living animal is called the pronghorn.

Scientists study them to learn about the past. They help us see how life changes over time.

Pronghorns have many interesting ways they work. They are ruminants, which means they have a four-chambered stomach. This special stomach helps them digest tough plants. They also have cloven hooves for walking. Their horns are very unique among animals. The horns have a hard, horny sheath. Unlike many other animals, they shed these horns after breeding season. Then, the horns grow back again.

This family has a long and diverse history. In the past, many different species lived in North America. Some of these animals had very strange horns. For example, the Hayoceros had four horns. Other animals even had as many as six horns!

Some species like Merriamoceros had horns shaped like fans. Others, like Paracosoryx, had horns that widened into forked tips.

These animals changed as the Earth changed. During the Miocene, the climate shifted. Subtropical woodlands turned into open savannah grasslands.

The antilocaprids evolved to live in these new grassy lands. They filled a role similar to the bovids found in the Old World. This group was very successful for a long time. They lived through the Miocene and the Pliocene periods.

Scientists have worked hard to find their family tree. They wanted to know which living animals are most related to them. A large study in 2019 used genome sequencing to find answers. This study looked at the DNA of many different ruminants. It suggested that antilocaprids are the sister taxon to giraffids. This means giraffes are their closest living relatives.

It is amazing to think a pronghorn is related to a giraffe.
