Moschidae is a special family of animals. We call them musk deer. They belong to a group of even-toed ungulates. This means their hooves have an even number of toes.

These animals are not very large. Most musk deer stay quite small. They are different from many other animals we see today. For example, they do not have horns on their heads. They do not have antlers either. Instead, they have long teeth that look like tiny swords.

Scientists also note they lack facial glands.

These animals have changed a lot over time. Long ago, many different kinds of moschids lived on Earth. They were very common in North America and Eurasia. This happened during a time called the Miocene.

Later, their numbers began to drop. By the early Pleistocene, most of them were gone. Now, only the genus Moschus still lives. We know for sure that Moschus, Micromeryx, and Hispanomeryx are part of this family. These animals have been known since at least 18 million years ago.

Scientists have worked hard to learn their history. For a long time, people thought musk deer were close relatives of true deer. True deer include animals like moose, elk, and caribou. However, a big study changed what we know. In 2003, Alexandre Hassanin led a study in France. He worked with the National Museum of Natural History.

This study looked at very small parts of the animal. It used mitochondrial and nuclear analyses to see their DNA. This helped researchers find the real family tree.

This new study showed a surprising link. It found that musk deer are actually closer to the Bovidae family. This family includes goats, sheep, cattle, and antelope.

The study showed that Moschidae and Bovidae are sister-clades. A sister-clade means they are close relatives that share a common ancestor. The true deer, or Cervidae, are a separate group. The split between these groups happened a long time ago. It occurred roughly 27 to 28 million years ago. This helped scientists organize the animal kingdom more accurately.

Learning about musk deer helps us understand how life connects. It shows us that looking at one part, like teeth, can be tricky. Even if an animal looks like a deer, its DNA might say something else.

Just like a giraffe is part of a different group, musk deer have their own path. We can see how groups of animals grow and change over millions of years. Studying these small, sword-toothed animals tells a huge story about our world. It reminds us that nature is full of surprises.
