They look like small deer with stocky bodies. However, they are not true deer. They belong to a group called Moschidae. This group is more like goats or sheep.

They do not have antlers on their heads. Instead, adult males have long canine teeth. These teeth look like sharp sabers. They use these tusks as weapons during mating season.

These animals have a very interesting way of living.

Most musk deer live all by themselves. They stay in their own special areas. They mark these areas with a scent. This scent comes from a part called a caudal gland. Musk deer are also very shy animals. They often come out at night or at dawn. They spend their time eating leaves and flowers. They also eat grasses, mosses, and lichens.

Scientists have studied these animals for a long time.

The musk deer family has a history of over 25 million years. Long ago, they lived in Europe and North America. Now, they are only found in Asia. The oldest records for their specific group come from Lufeng, China. There are eight different species of musk deer today. These include the Siberian musk deer and the Kashmir musk deer. Some live in the Himalayas, while others live in Russia.

There are many important facts about their numbers and homes.

There are between 400,000 and 800,000 musk deer in the wild. Many of them live in China across 17 provinces. Other groups live in Mongolia and Russia. People have hunted them for their musk glands. These glands are used to make perfumes. On the black market, they can cost $45,000 per kilogram. Because of this, many musk deer are now threatened.

We can see how humans and nature affect these deer.

Many musk deer are losing their forest homes. This is called habitat fragmentation. Global warming is also a big problem for them. As the world gets warmer, the deer must move higher up mountains. To help, the Chinese government made rules to protect them in 2003. They also use captive breeding to help numbers grow. These rules help keep the musk deer safe in the wild.
