They look like small deer. But they are not true deer. They are more like goats or sheep. Musk deer do not have antlers. Instead, males have long teeth called tusks. These tusks look like sabers.

These animals are often alone. They live in forests or rocky areas. They eat leaves, grass, and flowers. Adult males have a special musk gland. This gland makes a scent. They use this scent to find mates.

People have hunted musk deer for their scent. This scent is used in perfumes. Because of this, the deer face danger. Their homes are also being lost to cutting down trees. Global warming is another problem. As the world gets warmer, the deer must move higher up the mountains.

Today, many countries work to protect them. China has rules to keep them safe. They also help deer grow in special places. This helps their numbers grow back slowly. There are between 400,000 and 800,000 musk deer in the wild.
