Capra (genus)

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The genus Capra includes many types of goats. It has ten species. This group includes the markhor and several ibexes. One type is the domestic goat. People first kept these goats in Iran. This happened 10,000 years ago. Humans used them for milk, meat, and hair. Some people even used goat skins for writing.

Wild goats live in the mountains. They are very hardy animals. They can climb on bare rock. They can eat plants that do not grow well. You can tell them apart from sheep. Goats have scent glands near their eyes and feet. Some goats also have beards. They may have hairless calluses on their knees.

All Capra goats are ruminants. This means they chew the cud. They have a stomach with four parts. These parts help them digest their food. This happens in a set of steps. They swallow food and then bring it back up to chew it again. Most wild goats live in different places. They do not live in the same area. But in captivity, all Capra species can mate. They can make babies that can grow up too.
