Tahr

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Tahrs are large animals. They are related to goats and sheep. There are three kinds of tahr. They all come from Asia.

Scientists once thought they were one group. Now they know they are three separate groups. These are the Himalayan tahr, the Nilgiri tahr, and the Arabian tahr.

The Nilgiri tahr lives in South India. It is the state animal of Tamil Nadu. In 2023, the government made October 7 Nilgiri Tahr Day. This day honors E. R. C. Davidar.

The Arabian tahr lives in Oman. It is an endangered animal. This means there are not many left. The Himalayan tahr is more widespread. Some live in the Himalayas. Others live in New Zealand.

Tahrs have a daily routine. They feed in the morning. Then they take a long rest. They feed again in the evening. They are not active at night. They stay in the same place during the day.
