Mesoplodon whales are a big group of small whales. There are 16 species in this group. Scientists call them beaked whales. They have names that mean they have teeth in the middle of their jaws.

These whales have many special parts. Their bodies are shaped like a spindle. They have a small fin on their backs. Their heads are small and pointed. Most of these whales have large teeth. Some teeth even look like tusks. In some species, the bottom jaw looks like a playground slide.

We do not know much about them. They are hard to see in the wild. Most are very deep divers. They often eat squid. They are slow swimmers at the surface.

You might see marks on their skin. These are round scars. They come from bites by cookiecutter sharks. Some males also have scars from other males. Scientists are still finding new species. A new one was found in 2021. We may find even more soon.
