Mesoplodon whales are a very special group of sea animals. They belong to a group of toothed whales. There are 16 different species in this group. This makes it the largest group of whales in their order.

Scientists call them poorly known large mammals. We still have many things to learn about them. Their name comes from Greek words. It means they have a tooth in the middle of their jaw.

These whales have many interesting body parts. Their bodies are shaped like a spindle. They have small fins on their backs. Their heads are small and pointed at the end. Some species have a jaw that looks like a playground slide.

Most species have large teeth that look like tusks. Many of these whales have round scars on their skin. These marks come from cookiecutter sharks. Males often have scars from other males too.

Scientists have been finding these whales for a long time. Many species were named in the 1800s. For example, Blainville named one in 1817. Sowerby named another in 1804.

We are still finding new ones today. Two species were found very recently. One was found in 1991. Another was found in 2002. A new species was even described in 2021.

There are many different types of these whales. Some are called the pygmy beaked whale. Others are called the strap-toothed whale.

Scientists also know about four extinct species. These are whales that lived a long time ago. One was named M. longirostris. Another was named M. slangkopi. Some lived in the North Pacific. Others lived near South Africa. We do not know how many live in the ocean today.

Watching these whales in the wild is a hard job. They are very deep divers. Many of them eat only squid.

They swim very slowly at the surface. They do not make big splashes when they breathe. Some species are so rare that no one has seen them alive. They usually swim in groups. This makes them a great mystery for scientists to solve.
