Cetaceans are a special group of marine mammals. This group includes whales, dolphins, and porpoises.

They are found in all of the Earth's oceans. Some also live in rivers or brackish water. These animals have a fully aquatic life cycle. This means they live their entire lives in the water. Most cetaceans have a streamlined, fish-like body shape. This shape helps them move easily through the sea. They are all carnivores, so they only eat meat.

Moving through the water is a very specific way for them. They use powerful up-and-down movements of their tails. These horizontal tails are called flukes.

Their front limbs have changed into flippers to help them steer. Their back legs have mostly disappeared over time. They only have tiny bits of a pelvis and leg bones left inside. To breathe, they must come to the surface. They use blowholes on top of their heads to take in air. This allows them to breathe while most of their body stays underwater.

Scientists have learned a lot about where these animals come from. Even though they live in the sea, they are related to land animals. Genetic and fossil evidence shows they belong to a group called even-toed ungulates. They are most closely related to hippos.

Long ago, extinct groups like Basilosaurus also belonged to this group. About thirty-four million years ago, the two main types of whales split apart. This split created the toothed whales and the baleen whales.

There are about 90 living species of cetaceans today. They are divided into two groups called parvorders. The first is Odontoceti, or toothed whales. This group has 75 species, including dolphins and sperm whales. They use teeth to catch fish or squid.

The second group is Mysticeti, or baleen whales. This group has 15 species, like the blue whale. They use baleen, which are keratin bristles, to filter tiny food from the water.

The blue whale is the largest animal to ever live. It can reach 30 meters in length and weigh 173 tonnes.

Cetaceans are very intelligent and social animals. They have large brains and use complex songs to talk.

Many use echolocation, which is a way to use sound to find things. They produce sounds and use a fatty part of the head called a melon to help.

They also face many hard jobs in the modern world. Humans have hunted them for oil and meat since the Industrial Revolution. Today, they deal with noise, plastic, and climate change. We must learn how to protect these amazing sea creatures.
