Toothed whales are a huge group of amazing sea animals.

This group is called odontocetes. It includes dolphins, porpoises, and the massive sperm whale. They are different from baleen whales, which have plates instead of teeth.

There are 73 different species of toothed whales known today. These animals are some of the most widespread mammals on Earth. Some, like the tiny vaquita, only live in certain areas.

These whales have special ways to live in the deep ocean.

Most have streamlined bodies that help them swim very fast. They use a large tail fin to move up and down. Their front limbs are shaped into flippers to help them steer.

To stay warm, almost all have a thick layer of fat called blubber. This blubber provides energy and helps them float. Some species even store special wax esters in their fat to help them dive deeper.

Finding out about these animals took a long time.

In the fourth century BC, Aristotle thought whales were fish. He noticed they had lungs and blood like land animals. Later, in 1671, John Ray wrote about how their airways worked.

Scientists now know toothed whales evolved from land mammals. They share a common ancestor with the hippopotamus from 54 million years ago.

Toothed whales and baleen whales split apart about 34 million years ago.

Toothed whales use sound to find their way through the dark.

This way of seeing with sound is called echolocation. They make clicking sounds using a melon-shaped forehead.

The sound hits an object and bounces back to the whale. They catch these echoes through their lower jaw. This helps them hunt fish and squid in deep water.

This skill allows them to survive even if they cannot see well.

Many of these animals are very smart and social.

Some dolphins live in large groups called pods. A single pod can have over a thousand members.

Some species, like the orca, even eat other mammals. People often see these animals in books or movies.

Today, international laws protect them from being hunted. However, they still face hard jobs like marine pollution.
