There are 73 different species of toothed whales known today. These animals are some of the most widespread mammals on Earth. Some, like the tiny vaquita, only live in certain areas.

These whales have special ways to live in the deep ocean.

Most have streamlined bodies that help them swim very fast. They use a large tail fin to move up and down. Their front limbs are shaped into flippers to help them steer. To stay warm, almost all have a thick layer of fat called blubber. This blubber provides energy and helps them float. Some species even store special wax esters in their fat to help them dive deeper.

This group includes dolphins, porpoises, and large species like the sperm whale. There are 73 described species within this group. Odontocetes are one of two living groups of cetaceans. The other group is the baleen whales, or Mysticeti. While baleen whales use plates to filter food, odontocetes possess conical teeth.

These teeth are specifically designed for catching prey like fish and squid. This distinction between the two groups began approximately 34 million years ago.

Their front limbs are modified into flippers used primarily for steering. To maintain body heat in cold water, almost all odontocetes possess a thick layer of blubber.

This process allows whales to navigate and hunt in dark or deep waters where light cannot reach. To echolocate, the whale emits a series of rapid clicks. These sound pulses are sent out through a specialized, melon-shaped forehead.

When the sound waves hit an object, they reflect back toward the animal. The whale then retrieves these returning echoes through its lower jaw. This sophisticated system allows some species to thrive even if their eyesight is limited.

Many odontocetes are also masters of deep-sea diving.

To survive the intense pressure and limited oxygen of the deep ocean, they use several physiological strategies. They can slow their heart rates to conserve oxygen during a dive. Their bodies also reroute blood from non-essential tissues to vital organs like the heart and brain. Furthermore, they possess high concentrations of myoglobin in their tissues to store oxygen. Before committing to a deep descent, many whales perform "sounding." This involves a series of short, shallow dives to build up necessary oxygen reserves.

The vaquita is a very small species, while the sperm whale is massive. Some species show sexual dimorphism, where males and females have different physical traits. For example, in most species, females are larger, but in sperm whales, the males are larger. Socially, many dolphins are highly gregarious and live in pods. Some of these pods can consist of over one thousand individuals. While most eat fish, some species like the orca are predators that hunt other mammals.

Despite their intelligence and widespread presence, odontocetes face significant modern challenges.

While international laws now protect them from whaling, they still encounter threats from marine pollution and bycatch. The baiji is a tragic example, as it is considered functionally extinct following heavy pollution in the Yangtze River. Humans also interact with them through tourism, such as whale watching, and through captivity. Because of their high intelligence, there has been significant scientific discussion regarding their status, with some groups advocating for a cetacean bill of rights.
