We know that river dolphins are related to hippopotamuses. They split from a common ancestor about 40 million years ago. Some older fossils, like Isthminia panamensis, lived about 6 million years ago. We also know about the Baiji, or Chinese river dolphin. A survey in December 2006 found no Baiji left in the wild. This means that species is now considered functionally extinct.

River dolphins are part of a large group called Cetacea. This group includes whales and many other types of dolphins. Even though they live in rivers, they are still closely linked to ocean animals. For example, Amazon river dolphins are more closely related to ocean dolphins than to South Asian ones. Most river dolphins have females that are larger than the males. Females also take care of the calves, which are born in spring or summer.

Unlike many other dolphins, they are not a single evolutionary group. Scientists call this a polyphyletic group. This means different species of river dolphins evolved from different ancestors. They are part of the infraorder Cetacea. This group also includes whales and porpoises. River dolphins are important because they are specialized for life in rivers. To survive in murky river water, these animals have developed special biological tools. They have streamlined, torpedo-shaped bodies. Their limbs are modified into flippers that contain five digits. Unlike oceanic cetaceans, their neck vertebrae are not fused together. This gives them a flexible neck. They can turn their heads without moving their entire bodies. They swim by moving their tail fins and lower bodies up and down. Their flippers are mainly used for steering. Because they live in warm environments, they have very little blubber. Blubber is a layer of fat used for warmth and energy. In warm rivers, they do not need thick insulation.

These sound waves bounce off objects and return to the dolphin. For hearing, sound enters through the throat. It then passes through a fat-filled cavity to the inner ear. This family contains the Amazonian dolphins, such as the Amazon river dolphin. It also includes the Bolivian river dolphin. Another family is Pontoporiidae, which contains the La Plata dolphin. There was also a family called Lipotidae. This family included the Baiji, or Chinese river dolphin.

The history of these animals shows how they changed over millions of years. River dolphins belong to the clade Artiodactyla, which includes even-toed ungulates. Their closest living relatives are hippopotamuses. These two groups diverged about 40 million years ago. Ancient cetaceans first entered the sea about 49 million years ago. It is not known exactly when river dolphins moved into freshwater. Some scientists believe they are relictual populations. This means their ancestors lived in the ocean but were moved to rivers. Fossils like Isthminia panamensis lived about 6 million years ago.

Some species of river dolphins are quite rare or even gone. The Baiji, or Chinese river dolphin, is a notable example. A survey in December 2006 found no members of this species. The tucuxi is actually classified as an oceanic dolphin. By studying these connections, we see how life adapts to different environments.
