It is the largest of all toothed whales and the largest predator with teeth. These massive mammals live in oceans all over the world. They often travel long distances to find food or to breed.

Females and young males stay together in social groups. They work as a team to nurse and protect their calves. Adult males usually live a solitary life outside of mating season.

Sperm whales have a very special way of seeing in the dark. They use echolocation, which is a way of using sound to find things. The whale makes loud clicking sounds underwater. These sounds can reach 236 decibels, making them the loudest animals on Earth.

The sound waves help them find food in the deep, dark ocean. To reach their food, they must dive very deep. They are the third deepest diving mammals in the world.

Their ribs are held by flexible cartilage. This allows the ribcage to collapse safely under high pressure instead of snapping.

Humans have studied these whales for a very long time. A Swedish scientist named Peter Artedi described them in 1738. Later, the famous scientist Carl Linnaeus included them in his 1758 work.

There was once a big industry for catching sperm whales. This was a major part of life in the 19th century. The famous novel Moby-Dick tells a story about this time.

Today, the whales are protected by international laws. An organization called the International Whaling Commission helps keep them safe.

These animals are known for their incredible size and parts.

A mature male can grow to be very long and heavy. Their huge, block-shaped heads can be one-third of their total length. Inside the head is a waxy substance called spermaceti. This oil was once used to make candles and lamps.

They also produce ambergris, a waxy waste found in their digestive system. This substance is very valuable for making perfumes. A sperm whale can live for 70 years or even longer.

Many things about the sperm whale connect to our own world. For example, they have the largest brain on Earth. Their brain is more than five times heavier than a human brain.

Even though they are different from us, we share the same oceans. We can learn a lot about the deep sea by studying them. Their loud voices and deep dives show how amazing life can be. Watching them helps us understand how the physical world works.
