Most cetaceans live in the ocean. Some live in rivers or fresh water. They have smooth, fish-like bodies. This shape helps them swim fast. They use flippers to steer. They move through water by moving their tails up and down. Their tails are called flukes.

The second group is called Mysticeti. These are the baleen whales. They do not have teeth. Instead, they have baleen. This is a set of bristles used to strain small food from the water. The blue whale is a baleen whale. It is the largest animal ever known. It can grow to 30 meters long. It can also weigh 173 tonnes.

Cetaceans are very smart. They have large brains. Many use echolocation to find things. This is a way to use sound to see.
