Whales and dolphins are called cetaceans.

They are mammals that live in the water. They must surface to breathe air. They also nurse their young. Scientists believe they evolved from land animals with hooves.

These animals are called artiodactyls.

About 50 million years ago, these animals began to move into the water. One early group was the pakicetids.

They lived near fresh water. They had long, thin legs for running. Their bones were very thick. This helped them sink so they could wade in the water.

Next came the ambulocetids. These animals lived in bays and near the sea. They looked a bit like crocodiles. They had strong back legs. They used these legs to paddle through the water.

Over time, cetaceans changed even more. They split into two main groups. One group is the Mysticeti, which are baleen whales. The other is the Odontoceti, which are toothed whales. Toothed whales use echolocation. This is a way to find things using sound.

Modern whales are also very close relatives of hippos.
