Anthracotheres were a group of animals that lived long ago.

They looked like skinny hippos. They also looked a bit like pigs. They had small heads. Their feet were wide. This helped them walk on soft mud. Some used their teeth to dig up plant roots. They had about 44 teeth.

These animals lived in many places. They lived in Africa and Eurasia. Some even lived in North America. They lived in these lands for a long time.

Scientists think they are related to hippos. They might even be related to whales. This is because of their bone shapes. Some fossils were found in coal beds in France. This gave them the name "coal beast."

Most anthracotheres died out a long time ago. They disappeared from Europe and Africa during the Miocene. This may have happened because the climate changed. They also had to compete with pigs and hippos. The last group, called Merycopotamus, died out in Asia later on.
