The Anthracotherium was an extinct animal. Its name means "coal beast." Scientists gave it this name. They found its first fossils in coal beds in Europe.

This animal lived a long time ago. It lived from the Eocene period to the Miocene. It lived in many places. These places include Europe, Asia, and North America. It may have even reached South East Asia.

Anthracotherium looked a lot like a hippo. It is likely a relative of the hippo. It is also related to whales. This group is called Whippomorpha. Some species were quite large. One kind was about 2 meters long. It could weigh up to 250 kg. This is about the size of a pygmy hippo.

These animals had 44 teeth. Their teeth had special shapes on the top. They ate many kinds of food. Some ate leaves. Some ate fruit. Others were grazers that ate grass. Two kinds lived in Myanmar. They ate very similar foods.
