Most of these animals live on land. They use their hoofed toes to support their weight.

Scientists divide living ungulates into two main groups. The first group is Perissodactyla. These are odd-toed animals. This group includes horses, rhinos, and tapirs.

The second group is Artiodactyla. These are even-toed animals. This group includes pigs, deer, and giraffes.

Some animals in the even-toed group live in the sea. Whales and dolphins are artiodactyls. They do not have hooves.

Most ungulates eat plants. They use tiny bacteria in their guts to digest tough plant parts. Some animals, like pigs, eat both plants and meat. This is called being omnivorous.

Long ago, other animals had hooves too. Two groups lived in South America. They are now extinct. They died out about 12,000 years ago.
