Hooves help animals in many ways. They support the animal's weight. They also help the animal grip the ground. This grip is called traction.

Some animals have an even number of toes. We call these artiodactyls. Many of them have a cloven hoof. This means the hoof is split into two claws. Sheep and pigs have cloven hooves. Some also have small dewclaws. These extra claws help with grip on soft ground.

Other animals have an odd number of toes. These are called perissodactyls. Horses have one hoof on each foot. Tapirs are different. They have three toes on their back feet.

Hooves grow all the time. Wild animals wear them down naturally. But pets or farm animals may need help. People use shoes like oxshoes or horseshoes. These protect the feet from hard ground.
